2nd student sentenced in alcohol-related death

PORTLAND – A second University of Maine student was sentenced Friday to two months in jail for furnishing alcohol to a 19-year-old soccer team member whose death last fall was linked to underage drinking.

Anthony Michael Lord, 21, pleaded guilty in Cumberland County Superior Court to four charges of furnishing alcohol to minors as part of a deal in which the sole felony count against him was dropped.

Lord also faces two years of probation, during which he is barred from consuming alcohol and must undergo substance abuse counseling.

Adam Baxter, a freshman from England, died Nov. 24 at a home in Portland while on break from school and drinking with four friends. The alcohol was purchased by Lord, the only one in the group who could buy it legally.

Baxter choked to death after apparently passing out and breathing in vomit.

Sean Michael Meehan, 20, pleaded guilty earlier to furnishing a place for minors to consume alcohol and was given a 33-day sentence followed by three years’ probation. The party was in the basement of his parents’ home.
