Fund set up to help victims of China earthquake

Word has come from Jing Zhang, president of the Bangor Chinese School, regarding requests the school has received asking how to help victims of the May 12 earthquake centered in Wenchuan, Sichuan, China, Zhang wrote.

“In response to these requests,” she explained, “we have established an account to accept donations for earthquake relief.

“All donations will be sent to the disaster area directly” through the Chinese embassy in the United States.

To contribute to this effort, Zhang asks you make your check payable to Maine Support China and mail it to Maine Support China, 53 Cumberland St., Bangor 04401.

Zhang reminds you that “rescue workers continue to dig through collapsed schools and homes in a desperate attempt to find survivors of China’s worst earthquake in three decades.”

Organizers working to help the family of Jeff and Sonya Barclay build a new home remind you that one of several fundraisers is a yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the Dairy Queen on Stillwater Avenue in Old Town.

Jen Dudley said that people unable to attend but who would like to help the family of this young mother who has terminal cancer may send donations to the Barclay family, Penobscot Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 434, Old Town 04468.

Jim Leighton reports that the rescheduled Wicked Blue and Maximum Blue Bluegrass-Old Time Band concert is 7:30 tonight at the Orrington Grange Hall.

Admission is $12 and $10 for seniors.

Young fiddler Max Silverstein of Bangor will open the program, and refreshments will be available.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Bluegrass Association of Maine.

Toni Mailloux e-mailed to say the Belfast Lions Club’s Fabulous Sunday Brunch is 8 a.m.-noon Sunday, May 18, at the Waldo County Shrine Club on Northport Avenue in Belfast.

Admission is $8 for adults and $3 for children under 10, and proceeds benefit Hospice Volunteers of Waldo County.

Debbie Barnes of the Central Aroostook Steering Committee for March of Dimes urges “committed and faithful walkers to support” the March for Babies, which begins with registration and a brief ceremony at 10 a.m. and the walk at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 18, at the University of Maine at Presque Isle Campus Center.

Last year, this walk raised $26,000 to support “research and treatment for premature babies,” she wrote.

The public is invited to the Bunny Hunt Gospel Memorial 1-5 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at the Sherman Gym.

Hunt, who died in February, was a popular local and public servant.

The event, which benefits the Sherman Gym and Stacyville Community Church, will feature a varied performance by local and Canadian musicians, and a Covered Dish Fellowship Supper.

Admission is by donation.

Mary Bird of the Friends of Dr. Edith Marion Patch e-mailed to invite children and adults to the fourth annual Insect Adventures 2-4 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Page Farm and Home Museum at the University of Maine in Orono.

The free program will help participants identify insects and how they adapt to their environment. It will feature exhibits, games and crafts.

Mary Jane Bush of Bucksport Bay Healthy Communities Coalition invites you to a town hall meeting on underage drinking co-sponsored by the Bucksport School Department’s Coordinate School Health Program.

The meeting is 6 p.m. Monday, May 19, at the Alamo Theatre on Main Street and features state Attorney General Steven Rowe as the keynote speaker.

Bush wrote to say the program will feature a dramatic presentation by the Brewer High School performance arts class, a program of the Maine Alliance for Arts Education; and a discussion including Bucksport High School Principal Bob Doar, Bucksport Police Department Sgt. Sean Geagan and BHS student Gabe Sousa.

Everyone is invited to the program, which is part of a national and statewide effort to educate people about the effort to prevent and reduce underage drinking.

Jay Barnes of the Ellsworth Garden Club reports Cullen Schneider of Fairwinds Florist in Blue Hill will demonstrate container planting in “How Can You Contain Yourself” at 7 p.m. Monday, May 19, at University of Maine Cooperative Extension on Boggy Brook Road in Ellsworth.

Open to the public, refreshments will be served.
