BLUE HILL – George Stevens Academy will hold its annual weeklong Arts Fest beginning Monday.
The festival will offer students some 70 workshops, taught by artists, community members, alumni, parents, teachers and even fellow students.
This year’s Arts Fest also offers community members and parents a chance to participate during four afternoon performances that are open to the public. Those performances will be held at 1:15 p.m. in the gymnasium.
On Monday, the comedy and juggling group Fusion will perform. On Tuesday, the popular Faculty Band will play. Thursday brings the sounds of New Orleans to Blue Hill when the Hot 8 Brass Band performs its blend of hip-hop, contemporary jazz and the “Second-Line” parade tradition of New Orleans neighborhoods.
Poet and performer Patricia Smith, with the help of students, will give a slam poetry performance Friday afternoon. Smith is a four-time national individual champion of National Poetry Slam, and has published several books of poetry, as well other books including “Africans in America” and children’s books “Janna and the Kings” and “Mahina, the Mad Mad Moon.”
Planet Pan will close Arts Fest with a performance on steel drums.
Workshops this year will include offerings in the culinary arts, literary arts, visual arts, music, theater, dance, photography, and film and video. Additionally, GSA seniors will present oral debates during Arts Fest.
A complete schedule of debates may be viewed by opening the “Debates” link on GSA’s home page at www.george
