Firefighters save house from nearby barn fire

MONROE – Fire consumed an old chicken barn Friday night on Emery Road near the Dixmont-Monroe line, but firefighters saved the house on the property.

Dixmont Fire Chief James Dunivan, whose volunteer department responded to the 8:30 p.m. call, said the barn was burned to the ground and the cars parked inside were destroyed.

“We were there until 11:30 that night,” Dunivan said.

“We saved the house on the property,” Dunivan added, “We kept the house cool by wetting it down.”

The fire spread from a permitted burn, he said.

Volunteer fire departments from Monroe, Dixmont, Brooks, Jackson and Newburgh assisted.

Although Dunivan did not know the name of the property owner, neighbors said the barn belonged to Larry and Elizabeth Dyer of 51 Emery Road.
