BROWNVILLE – A fire that apparently started from ashes in a barbecue grill gutted a Henderson Street home late Saturday night.

Milo-Brownville Fire Chief Dave Preble said firefighters received a call about midnight that the home of Carol Witham was on fire in Brownville. He said a charcoal grill had been used earlier that night and had been left unattended. Preble said he believed the house fire started from the earlier fire in the grill.

Preble said the fire was difficult to fight because it started in the back of the building and burned the attic. The roof of the 2 1/2-story home was destroyed and the building was gutted in places, according to the chief. He said Witham reportedly had insurance on the building.

Milo and Sebec firefighters assisted Brownville firefighters. Three Rivers Ambulance were at the scene.
