Fire destroys milk delivery truck

DOVER-FOXCROFT – A milk delivery truck that had been backed up to a loading dock at Shaw’s Supermarket was destroyed by fire Tuesday morning.

Dover-Foxcroft Fire Chief Joseph Guyotte said the truck driver had delivered one load of milk products into the store from the loading platform located in the rear of the store and was returning to the truck when he noticed the truck lights had flickered. It was during his second trip into the store with another load, when the truck erupted in fire. A store employee noticed the fire and hollered that a truck was on fire, he said.

A bread delivery driver who also was unloading products at the same time rushed outside to move his truck strewing loafs of packaged bread in the process, according to Guyotte.

A circuit had shorted in the vehicle and had started the fire, according to the fire chief. He said the fire destroyed the milk truck. No damage was done to the bread truck.

Guyotte credited whomever closed the door to the store when the fire was spotted.

“If that fire had gone through that overhead door, it would be a different story, we’d have been coming through the front door,” Guyotte said. He also said the fact the store had a sprinkler on the loading dock helped hold the fire back from the platform.

Guilford firefighters were called to the scene as a precaution.
