HERMON – While the threatening skies above the Hermon High softball field produced very little precipitation Tuesday afternoon, the Hawks created a storm of their own, with their bats.

The hosts pounded out 10 hits and strung together a pair of three-run innings en route to a pivotal 8-2 Class B victory over Old Town.

After spotting the Coyotes a 1-0 lead in the first inning, coach Adam Leach’s Hawks went to work in the third.

Ashley Thayer led off with a single, moved to second on Erin Arnold’s sacrifice bunt and came around on Jasmine Veilleux’s single.

Jessie Devou then drove in Veilleux with a single, and later scored on an error to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Since Old Town righty Hannah Morin is primarily a fastball pitcher with pinpoint control – she only walked one batter – the Hawks were in attack mode at the plate early and often.

“She’s very consistent, we just had to stay back and wait for our pitch,” said Veilleux.

Winning pitcher Debbie Colpitts and Arnold drove in runs with singles in the third while Colpitts and Ally Wharton each scored on an error off the bat of Arnold in the fifth.

All but one Hermon starter had at least one hit in the contest while all but two scored at least one run.

“That was the big key for us, everybody had an important [role] in today’s game. It was a good team win,” Veilleux said.

Leach added, “it was one through nine, it wasn’t like one or two girls in the lineup that were hitting. Everybody made a contribution.”

Colpitts, a freshman lefthander, had another consistent pitching outing, scattering two runs on six hits while walking nobody and striking out eight.

“That’s not unusual, it’s been like that since day one,” said Leach, whose club improves to 7-4. “She’s playing with the confidence of an upperclassman.

Colpitts settled down after allowing a run on two hits in the top of the first.

“I was just thinking that my team will back me up,” Colpitts said. “My team backed me up on everything.”

In addition to her performance in the circle, Colpitts finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base while Amanda Page was the Hawks’ other repeat hitter with two singles.

After splitting a Saturday doubleheader at Caribou, the Hawks rediscovered their confidence.

“We expected to get both games at Caribou. It probably hurt our confidence, so this was a great way to get it back,” said Leach.

The victory was also big in terms of Heal Point positioning, as the Hawks came into the game fifth in the latest rankings while the Coyotes were sixth.

Hannah Morin had put the 7-4 Coyotes on top with a single to drive in Ashley Goodwin, who had tripled. In the fifth, Micayla Hussey doubled and scored on Whitney Leland’s single.
