Judge dismisses lawsuit against officer

PORTLAND – A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by an exotic dancer claiming a South Portland police officer used excessive force after she arrived at a hotel to do her act.

U.S. District Judge George Singal granted Sgt. Steven Webster’s motion asking for summary judgment in a lawsuit filed last year by Rosanna Morelli.

In the suit, Morelli claimed Webster shoved her against a hallway wall and grabbed her arm and wrist when she attempted to leave the hotel. She had been contacted in her capacity as an exotic dancer by undercover officers who had set up a prostitution sting operation. No charges were filed.

In his ruling, Singal wrote that Webster was entitled to “qualified immunity,” a standard that insulates police from liability even if their actions are later found to be unlawful.

The Maine Civil Liberties Union, which represents Morelli, says it will appeal.
