AUGUSTA – A five-year state police veteran who is also a member of the tactical team is Maine’s Trooper of the Year.

Lucas Hare of Raymond was honored Friday at the annual state police awards ceremony in Augusta. Hare, who patrols in the Gray area, is a former South Portland police officer joined the state police in 2003.

Hare also received a bravery commendation for his role in a standoff with a gunman in Auburn last year.

Twenty-one Maine troopers and 10 from the New Hampshire state police also received bravery awards for their response to the Auburn incident in which a man killed his mother at their home and then held police at bay for 17 hours before being shot and killed by police.
