2 men injured in crash on Route 1 in Sullivan

SULLIVAN – Two men were injured Wednesday afternoon in a two-car accident on Route 1.

The accident took place at about 4:15 p.m., according to Trooper Greg Burns of the Maine State Police. Both cars were traveling south on Route 1. The first vehicle, a 2003 Chevy pickup driven by Kelvin Woodworth, 81, of Hancock had stopped to make a left-hand turn into the parking lot of Dunbar’s Store. Woodworth’s pickup was struck from behind by a 1993 Ford pickup driven by Ian Grant, 19, of Sullivan.

Grant was traveling at close to the highway speed of 45 mph, according to Trooper Burns, and his vehicle pushed Woodworth’s pickup a considerable distance before the vehicles came to rest.

Both men complained of neck and back pain and were removed from their vehicles by emergency crews. They were taken by ambulance to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital where they were still being treated late Wednesday afternoon. Their injuries were not believed to be life threatening, Burns said.

Driver inattention was the cause of the accident, the trooper said. Grant, however, will face charges related to his vehicle’s registration and inspection. Both vehicles were considered total losses.

Burns was assisted at the scene by Trooper Mike Southard and crews from Sullivan Fire and Rescue and County Ambulance.
