Big School (Classes A-B)
Josh Tardiff
Tardiff, a first baseman for the Hampden Academy baseball team, delivered key hits in two narrow victories by the Broncos. He had two singles and two RBIs as Hampden outlasted Lawrence of Fairfield 8-7 in eight innings. Tardiff then had three hits, including an RBI triple with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, as the Broncos upended Brewer 6-5.
Small School (Classes C-D)
Mike Crowley
Crowley, a member of the Sumner of East Sullivan baseball team, came up big both on the mound and at the plate as the Tigers earned their first two wins of the season, both over quality opponents. Crowley hit a grand slam during an eight-run third inning that lifted Sumner past Orono 15-14, then pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts as the Tigers topped Stearns of Millinocket 13-1. Crowley also had a double, a single and two RBIs against the Minutemen.
GIRLS
Big School (Classes A-B)
JENNIE LUCY
Lucy, a Bangor High School senior distance runner, continued her strong start this outdoor track and field season with two individual victories in a meet at Lawrence in Fairfield last Friday. Lucy won the 1,600 in 5 minutes, 25.96 seconds, a personal best, and later captured the 800 in 2:28.54 and anchored the Rams’ winning 4×400 relay.
Small School (Classes C-D)
ERICA LYFORD
Lyford, a Penquis of Milo pitcher, continued her lights-out season last week, striking out 36 of the 40 batters she faced in three games, tossing a no-hitter and two one-hitters while aiding her cause with a .693 batting average including two doubles, three triples and 15 runs batted in. The Patriots were seeded sixth in the latest Heal Points.
