Belfast Garden Club to feature 1847 brick home during tour

BELFAST – The Belfast Garden Club will feature the garden planted by Harmony Joseph and her husband, John Logalbo, on Friday, May 23, at the couple’s 1847 brick home at 71 Congress St. The garden tour will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the second in the series of Open Garden Days sponsored by the Belfast Garden Club.

Joseph planted 800 bulbs of all sorts last fall for this season’s display. Logalbo, who enjoys rock and brick work, has created brick pathways and stone walls throughout and around the beds.

The next garden tour is Friday, May 30, when Elaine Tucker opens her terraced hillside garden at 265 High St. in Belfast. All tours this year will be on Fridays. There are 16 more scheduled. The final tour is Sept. 19.

The garden club suggests a donation of $3. Funds raised benefit the club’s Belfast Civic Beautification projects, including the gardens at the library, the wharf, Post Office Square, City Park and the cemetery. A 10-visit ticket is available for $20 from garden club members and at each tour. A season pass good for all 18 gardens costs $35 and can also be purchased from club members or from chairwoman Martha Block, 338-0085.

For a list of all the gardens and directions, look for the Open Garden Days flier in local restaurants, nurseries, B&Bs, the library and the visitors center or visit belfastgardenclub.org. Brochures and maps to the gardens are available at Post Office Square where maps and brochures are stored inside the decorative birdhouse.
