May 18-24 is National Emergency Medical Services Week and also the kickoff for the campaign “to fund an EMS memorial to those who have given endless time and effort to their fellow citizens,” Dr. Paul Liebow of Bucksport wrote in a letter to the Bangor Daily News.

Liebow said the EMS memorial will be erected between the law enforcement and firefighter memorials near the State House in Augusta.

Its theme “is recognition of an extraordinary system totally centered around patient care,” and will feature “a bronze statue by acclaimed Maine sculptor Forest Hart” of Monroe of “a little girl who has just fallen off her bike, in traffic,” and is in need of “timely, appropriate care.”

The first responders in the sculpture “represent volunteer and paid services, experienced and newly-grained providers, men and women who have dedicated their lives to their fellow citizens,” Liebow wrote.

Liebow urges you to honor all EMS providers through your “generous support” for this memorial.

Donations can be sent to EMS Memorial, c/o KVEMS, 71 Halifax St., Winslow 04901.

I offer a tip of the pink cap to Ruth Susee of Kenduskeag who is raising funds to participate in not one but two Breast Cancer 3-Days walks in October in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

The 60-mile events benefit Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust.

A 10-year cancer survivor, Susee wrote this will be her ninth and 10th walks.

The 14 national walks, she said, will raise “a tremendous amount of money” for breast cancer research.

“My hope is that we can put an end to this awful disease so my granddaughters will never have to go through what I and millions of other men and women have had to go through.”

You can help Susee raise funds to participate in these walks by attending her Breast Cancer 3-Day yard sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 24, at 113 Birch St., Bangor.

Dr. Calvin Newman of Island Falls “has retired after 61 years,” Linda Lynch e-mailed.

The public is invited to attend a “Pot Luck Celebration” for the local veterinarian at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 25, at the Island Falls VFW Hall.

Lynch also requests that you send “pictures of your animals and any stories” you recall about Doc Newman to her at P.O. Box 408, Sherman 04776.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for youths and $20 for families. Proceeds benefit the Waldo County YMCA day camp.

A teacher and coach who was instrumental in starting the Belfast YMCA, Clapper wrote, Dutch died unexpectedly in February.

Here’s a “mark your calendar” reminder from Prospect Community Club president Barbara Tilley for anyone ever associated with the Prospect Community Center building, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

The facility’s 100th birthday party will feature free ice cream and cake, an art display and Historical Society display from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 21, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 22, at the facility on Route 1A in Prospect.
