‘Comic’ auditions show promise

There aren’t many times in life when you want to pee your pants, but Wednesday night I was hoping and came pretty close a couple of times.

The Man on the Couch had to work late Wednesday, so I watched the preview of “The Last Comic Standing” auditions by myself. It’s not nearly as much fun to laugh alone (in fact, it makes you feel a little silly), especially when the dog sits across the room in his chair and looks at you with his head tilted wondering what you’re doing. But that’s exactly what I did.

This season is shaping up to be the funniest yet. If the contestants can carry on the laughs past their first appearances, it’s going to be a tough choice in the end.

See for yourself at 8:30 p.m. Thursday and see who makes it one step closer to becoming “The Last Comic Standing.”

Now, for the real news that will be old news by the time you read this. Since my final pick for “American Idol,” Syesha, was eliminated, I had to improvise and choose between the two Davids. My take – David Cook has the talent and stage presence to do whatever his heart desires. David Archuleta on the other hand needs some guidance, and an “Idol” contract would have given him exactly what he needed to grow into an even more successful performer than he already is.

In fact, I was so sure that Archuleta was going to win that I’d written this portion of this column in advance and had to change it. So, I still think America made the right choice since there was no bad decision to be made, but I was surprised.

I also must add that even though The Man on the Couch’s Mom (my favorite future mother-in-law) had it wrong, she’s not alone. In the end, 97 million votes were cast – another “Idol” record – and a deserving winner was crowned and that’s what “Idol” is all about.

Most importantly, Wednesday night was a fun show to watch no matter what singer you were rooting for. The contestants were having the time of their lives, the celebrity appearances were unbelievable, and the music was great. What more could you ask for?

Now we can gear up for the real singing contest, “Nashville Star,” that’s set to premiere its sixth season at 9:30 p.m. Monday, June 9, on USA Network. This country girl will be sure to tune in and get my top three picks ready.
