Grant to help study of Atlantic salmon

WASHINGTON – The Maine Department of Marine Resources will receive $1,138,306 in funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The grant will be used to fund a research study and assessment of Atlantic salmon in Maine’s freshwater rivers.

The collaborative assessment will be performed by the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission and the National Marine Fisheries Service and will focus on smolt emigration and pre-smolt abundance as well as adult Atlantic salmon returns and redd counts in rivers of the Maine Distinct Population Segment. The study intends to examine both freshwater production and marine survival in order to better understand the survival mechanisms of the Atlantic salmon during specific life stages.

In announcing the grant, U.S. Sens. Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins, R-Maine, said in a press release that “The future of Maine’s marine life depends on the informative research projects and valuable conservation efforts that the Maine Department of Marine Resources undertakes each year.”
