In defense of Cookson

“Maine high court hears Brewer gay rights case” (BDN, May 16) includes inaccurate allegations about Kelly Cookson and the activities that took place on her team. I was a member of the softball team when these incidents occurred and can assure the public that absolutely no one was forced to eat or walk through sheep feces, as the attorney alleged.

Unfortunately for Cookson, she is a victim of double jeopardy. Her actions were investigated by Brewer’s previous superintendent and dealt with.

Instead of closing the book and moving forward, Dan Lee made it his business and ended up terminating her employment with the Brewer school system. What is even more unfair is that every other member of the softball coaching staff who was fully aware of the events that took place is still employed by the school system and has not been punished.

During my time at the Brewer schools I played for numerous coaches in various sports. There are only a select few for whom I would say it was a tremendous privilege to play, and one of those, without a doubt, was Cookson.
