PORTLAND – The police chief in Maine’s largest city has applied for a job in Texas.
Officials in Odessa, Texas, say Portland Police Chief Tim Burton is one of three finalists to be police chief in that city. For his part, Burton says he has accomplished many of his goals and he’s eligible to retire with a pension. He says that it makes sense, at this point in his career, to look at his options.
Burton took over 21/2 years ago after Chief Michael Chitwood, who was known for his outspoken style, took a job in Pennsylvania. City Manager Joseph Gray says he wanted someone who would “change the style and tone of his predecessor” and that Burton has delivered.
