CAMDEN – Wayfarer Marine has submitted drawings to the town’s planning office, calling for a three-part construction project of a boat shop and new work buildings.
Town planner Jeff Nims said Friday that Wayfarer would construct an 8,400-square-foot building, 40 feet tall, in the Bean Yard, the historic boat yard named for a 19th century boat builder, near the outer harbor. The plan also identifies for removal a large building near the water in the Bean Yard.
Nims said the company’s “modernization” plan is in the preapplication stage. Wayfarer will discuss the proposal informally with the planning board at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 4.
The second part of the plan calls for constructing a commercial building near the inner harbor for office space and general boat work. The building would be 24 feet tall and would abut a parking lot with 45 spaces defined in the center of the property.
A third part of the plan involves construction of a 112-by-15-foot work platform and wharf next to the travel lift to allow Wayfarer a greater capacity for handling larger boats.
The company also plans to build three residences in the two red sheds at the head of the harbor. The residences would be on the second floor, in keeping with the town’s zoning. The first floor would be used for office space and storage.
Nims said the plans are consistent with current land-use regulations and require no voter action.
Last fall voters rejected amendments to land-use rules which Wayfarer wanted for building residences on some of its property. The company said it wanted to build the homes to raise money for investment in its marine operations.
