Greenville’s initiative to sponsor Maine-Quebec student exchanges is certainly very good news. It is unfortunate that such gestures of openness are so rare. I wish that much more could be done to awaken interest in the Francophone nation beside us: its culture, its language, its music, its poetry and its thought. If our eyes (and, even more, our ears) were opened to Quebec, Maine – especially northern Maine – would become a more creative and interesting place and economic benefits would follow that we cannot now imagine.
