FORT KENT – For the second time in as many years, the University of Maine at Fort Kent will be host to a state convention for a group geared toward helping women better themselves and contribute to their community.
University officials announced late last week that the 87th Maine Business and Professional Women state convention would be held at the UMFK campus from Friday, June 6, through Sunday, June 8.
BPW-Maine is the Maine Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs and consists of women from around the state, meeting in local organizations and contributing to their own development and to their communities’ growth through scholarships, charitable donations and civic activities. The group’s mission is to achieve equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education and information.
Members from throughout the state are expected to attend the event in Fort Kent, and Dr. Richard Cost, the president of UMFK, said both Fort Kent and the campus community are happy to be catering to the crowd once again.
“The Maine BPW is an important organization representing business and professional leaders from all parts of Maine,” Cost said in a press release. “These individuals make vital contributions to their communities and to this state and we are delighted to host them on this campus,” he said.
During the convention, Business and Professional Women members will hear reports of officers, state directors, district directors and committee chairs; elect officers for 2008-09; adopt a budget; adopt a legislation platform; consider recommendations from BPW-USA; select a representative to serve on the national legislative platform committee; study the national program for the coming year; and conduct other business.
