2 Mainers die, 2 hurt in I-95 crash Driver in rollover may have fallen asleep, trooper says

ALTON – An accident Monday afternoon on Interstate 95 claimed the lives of two men from southern Maine and hospitalized two more, according to Maine State Police.

The accident happened around 1:15 p.m. Monday as Gregory J. Hoyt, 59, of Windham was driving a 2000 Land Rover south on the highway near mile marker 199, according to Maine State Trooper Scott Hamilton. Riding with Hoyt were Bruce A. Sawyer, 57, of Windham, Karl Hartwell, 61, of Gorham and David Daigle, 50, also of Gorham, Hamilton said.

“It appeared the operator may have fallen asleep, overcorrected, and went off the right side,” the trooper said. “[The vehicle] rolled several times.”

Both Hoyt and Sawyer, who was riding as a passenger in the front seat, died at the accident scene, Hamilton said. Hartwell and Daigle were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with nonlife-threatening injuries, he said.

Hamilton said all four men were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. He said he believes they were driving south from a camp farther north, but he wasn’t sure of the camp’s location.
