While I do sympathize with folks affected by Roxanne Quimby’s purchase of land they leased for years, it’s important to point out that Ms. Quimby’s purchase ultimately will help keep Maine the way it traditionally has been.
I have heard of “traditions” such as ATV riding and snowmobiling as if it is the inherent right of individuals to ride these vehicles everywhere. But we live in a country that encourages landowner rights. When we rent or lease, we are not buying. I applaud Ms. Quimby’s decision to allow these folks five more years of land use. Most people who rent or lease are not given that kind of grace period when a new owner buys a leased or rented property.
Keeping large tracts of land wild while still allowing nondestructive activities to continue is one of the best things that can be done for Maine in this time of sprawl. Wildlife needs habitat where it will not be harassed. Hunters should realize that vast areas of wild lands, closed to destructive activities, allow wildlife populations to grow in a healthy and more natural manner than, say, killing coyotes to boost deer populations.
Many who believe in landowner rights would be the last people to think they should be told what to do with their land. I hope Ms. Quimby knows there are many more fans of Roxanne than those who want to “ban Roxanne.” We are the quiet majority.
