Calais High School
Principal Jeanne R. Peacock has announced the Class of 2008 honor parts.
David Lumbert, son of Paula and David Lumbert of Calais, is valedictorian.
Jeff Francis, son of Cathy and Michael Francis and Susan Wichenbauch, is the salutatorian.
First honor part is awarded to Ken Peterson, son of Carol and Paul Peterson of Calais. Second honor part is held by Elise Ludington, daughter of Dr. Laurie Churchill of Calais and Greg Ludington of Crawford. Third honor part is held by Nathan O’Neill, son of Renee and Vince O’Neill of Cooper. Fourth honor part is awarded to Martha Ludington, twin sister of Elise. Fifth honor part is awarded to Dylan Karvia, son of Mary and Patrick Karvia.
Lumbert is the current president of the Maine Association of Student Councils. He will preside over the state convention at Maine Maritime Academy this week. He has served as the Webmaster for the Calais High School Web site, www.calaisschools.org. Additional activities in school have included drama, tennis, math team and National Honor Society. David will attend Dartmouth College in the fall.
Francis too will be headed to Dartmouth College. He has participated for four years in band, National Honor Society, math team, academic decathlon and the civil rights team. Francis has been active in soccer, cross-country and track.
Peterson, who will attend Colby College this fall, has participated in the Upward Bound program and its summer program at Bowdoin College. He has helped recommission 128 computers that were donated to the Calais schools by the U.S. Air Force.
Elise and Martha Luddington have been four-year members of the soccer team and have been members of the softball and basketball teams. They have sung at special occasions at the First Congregational Church in Calais. Both plan to attend the University of Maine in Orono.
O’Neill served as captain of three sports this year, soccer, basketball and tennis. He has been president of the National Honor Society and vice president of the Class of 2008. He will attend the University of New England.
Karvia moved to Calais from Alaska. At his previous high school he was active with the swim team, pep band and peer tutoring. Dylan will attend Southern Maine Community College.
Graduation activities for the Class of 2008: Graduation Ball, 7 p.m. Saturday, May 31; Class Night, 7 p.m. Friday June 6; Commencement 1 p.m. Sunday, June 8, all in the Calais High School gymnasium.
