BANGOR – As the Senate contemplated continued funding for the Iraq War, members of the peace and justice community held a press conference at the Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine and then visited the offices of Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe to deliver more than 100 signatures on a petition urging them to vote against further funding of the occupation of Iraq.

Organizers said they were encouraged last week when Reps. Mike Michaud and Tom Allen voted with the House majority to stop Iraq War spending. “We hope our senators will also listen to the will of the people of Maine and vote to end spending for the Iraq War which has cost so many lives, has made us less secure and drains funds needed here at home,” said Ilze Petersons from the Peace & Justice Center.

Organizers said those wishing to sign on to the petition can call 942-9343 or e-mail info@peacectr.org.
