ACADIA NATIONAL PARK – To celebrate the 40th annual National Trail Day, the public is invited to participate in events planned for Saturday, June 7.
Officials with the park and Friends of Acadia have scheduled trail and carriage road projects on Mount Desert Island and the Schoodic Peninsula and a guided hike up Beech Mountain that will include a tour of the mountain’s fire tower, which normally is kept closed to the public but will be open until 3 p.m. Registration is required for the guided hike, which will be limited to two groups of 15 people.
Activities begin at 8 a.m. with a display and demonstration at the park’s headquarters on Eagle Lake Road in Bar Harbor. Volunteer work projects and the guided hike are expected to end by noon. Volunteers interested in working on trails at Schoodic are asked to meet at the Schoodic Education and Research Center at 9 a.m.
Participants are encouraged to car-pool and should bring water, gloves, bug repellent and proper attire. To register for the hike or work projects, contact Terry Begley at Friends of Acadia at 288-3340 or terry@friendsofacadia.org. More information is available at www.friendsofacadia.org.
