Beautification efforts begin in downtown Millinocket

MILLINOCKET – Expect Millinocket to look a bit rosier this summer.

The Millinocket Garden Club, Town Council Beautification Committee, Town Manager Eugene Conlogue, the Department of Public Works and a host of other volunteers have started sprucing up the downtown and other parts of the community with flower plantings, tree trimming, trash pickup and other beautification efforts.

“We hope to get a lot done,” said Cathy Olsen, business coordinator for the Katahdin Area Chamber of Commerce, who is helping organize the effort with resident Kathy Gagnon. “A great deal of good can come from this.”

Public Works Department workers were due to hang floral baskets and American flags along Penobscot Avenue utility poles this or last week, while volunteers Tom and Ann Monteith will be beautifying the Municipal Building, according to a statement the volunteers released.

The hanging plants will run from Central Street along Penobscot to Veteran’s Park.

The Penobscot Avenue work is part of the first phase of the effort. Other phases include extending plantings and banner placement in and around Veteran’s Park, Central Street, and Peddler’s Hill. These are slated to occur next summer.

The volunteer effort is an outgrowth of Garden Club works – club members have been beautifying downtown and other town areas for years, Olsen said – and of Town Council attempts to get more residents involved in the town’s economic and cultural revitalization.

Anyone interested in volunteering for or otherwise contributing to the beautification is asked to call the town office or Conlogue at 723-7000.
