LINCOLN – A quick response from firefighters contained a fire that began in a cigarette receptacle and burned the siding of a Main Street apartment building early Tuesday. No one was injured, firefighters said.
The fire at 197 Main St. was reported at about 12:06 a.m. when a tenant noticed that the receptacle, which was on a second-story outdoor walkway, had caught fire, firefighter engineer Ken Lovdahl said.
The flames were eating into the siding when firefighters arrived a few minutes later. Firefighters searched the two-story building’s interior but found no other signs of fire, Lovdahl said.
There was $1,000 in damage, firefighters said.
As a precaution, firefighters called for help from the Howland Volunteer Fire Department and asked Mattawamkeag’s volunteer firefighters to stand by at the Lincoln station, Lovdahl said.
