I have been a supporter of the Iraq war effort because I bought into the fact that a failure to achieve victory there threatens our national security. We face an equal or greater threat due to our lack of a national energy policy. Having one would allow us to control our own destiny and regulate our economy.
Perhaps higher fuel prices are the wake-up call we need to get citizens behind efforts to develop our own natural energy supplies. The problem will be that as we begin those initiatives and foreign oil prices come back down, we will once again abandon most efforts to become energy independent.
We need leaders who can see beyond the next election to demand a long-term solution or we will forever be held hostage by our demand for foreign fuel. The average American, including myself, is often shortsighted and longs for the next government quick fix. We are running out of quick fixes and must recognize that the long-term success of our country will rest on long-term solutions.
Only true leaders will be able to look past their own ambition to ensure the same kind of opportunities we have had will be available for generations of Americans to come. Do we have any?
