MACHIAS – A Washington County grand jury has charged a 24-year-old Lubec man with kidnapping as a result of an incident involving his girlfriend.
On April 23, Michael Wentworth and his girlfriend were at the home of Howard and Lorraine Robbins in Lubec when Wentworth decided to leave.
The girlfriend told police she wanted to drive because she felt that Wentworth was too drunk to do so, an affidavit of probable cause on file with the court said. “After asking [Wentworth] several times [the victim] told [Wentworth] she wasn’t going with him and she went into the Robbins residence,” the affidavit said.
A fight allegedly ensued.
The victim said they then went out to Wentworth’s car, where he allegedly beat her head on the steering wheel, the court documents said. “[Wentworth] continued to beat her as he was driving, even stopping at least once to haul her out of the Jeep and beat her, then throw her back in the vehicle,” the victim told police.
The couple then went to the Harold Morey residence, also in Lubec, “where [Wentworth] dragged her out of the Jeep by her legs and continued to beat on her,” the affidavit said. Wentworth] then got on her back and started to twist her neck and told her that ‘tonight was the night she was going to die.'”
The victim told police that he twisted her neck so hard that her nose bled and she began coughing up blood, the court documents said. The victim ran next door to a neighbor’s house and police were called.
Wentworth told police a different story while waiting to take an Intoxylizer test. He said that he and the victim had gotten into a fight because the victim “came home with track marks on her arm,” the affidavit said.
The defendant told police that he did “put the knuckles” to her and hit her because she had punched him first. “He then said that he did use a little bit of force on her and grabbed her at the Morey residence and she ran to the [neighbor’s] residence,” the affidavit said.
According to the affidavit, Wentworth’s urine screen revealed positive results for oxycodone, opiates and marijuana.
