SOUTH PORTLAND – The Maine Association of Realtors says existing home sales fell 23 percent in April from a year ago. The median sales price dropped 11 percent from $201,000 to $178,200.

In Penobscot County, 233 homes were sold Feb. 1-April 30, a 9 percent decline from 2007. The median sales price was $136,500 down from $146,000 in 2007.

Statewide, sales picked up with 708 homes sold in April compared to 650 in March.

Nationally, sales fell 16 percent in April from 2007, while the median price dropped more than 8 percent to $200,700.
