Penobscot Job Corps earns accreditation

BANGOR – The New England Association of Schools & Colleges Inc. has accredited the Penobscot Job Corps Center.

Accreditation indicates that a school meets or exceeds the NEASC standards encompassing educational programs, faculty and staff, the student body, financial stability, community involvement and the building. It is an expression of confidence in the institution’s purposes, performances, and human and financial resources.

As a part of the accreditation process the school took part in a yearlong self-study that engaged the entire campus community in analysis, self-reflection and planning.

Penobscot Job Corps submitted its self-study report last summer. In October, the school was visited by a seven-member committee composed of administrators and teachers who have been trained in the NEASC evaluation process. The primary reason for committee’s visit is to examine the strengths and weaknesses as described in each of the self-study documents, and then to develop a list of commendations and recommendations.

In operation more than 27 years, the Penobscot Job Corps program provides alternative education and training for young people ages 16 to 24. The NEASC Accreditation will open more educational opportunities for Maine’s at-risk youth, center officials noted.
