Lewiston school to bear name of almanac editor

LEWISTON – A new school in town will bear the name of the longtime editor of the Farmer’s Almanac.

Raymond Geiger Elementary School, with an enrollment of 650, is scheduled to open in September 2009 as a replacement for Pettingill Elementary.

The original recommendation was to name the school College Street Elementary, for its location. But School Committee members followed the lead of the city’s five other elementary schools and chose the name of a Lewiston resident who contributed to the community. The name of Raymond Geiger, who died in 1994, was the unanimous choice.

Geiger, who moved his company from New Jersey to Lewiston in 1955, served as almanac editor for 60 years.

His son, Peter, said his father loved and promoted his adopted city, but if he knew that a school was being named in his honor, he’d just smile. “For once in his life he’d be speechless,” Geiger said.
