Public invited on bus trip to Shaker village

Anyone who would like to take a bus tour to visit the Canterbury Shaker Village in Canterbury, N.H., is invited to join members of the Hampden Historical Society on a trip to that National Historic Landmark.

The trip begins at 6 a.m. Saturday, June 28, when the bus leaves the Maine Savings Federal Credit Union parking lot at 101 Western Ave., Hampden.

The $70-per-person cost includes travel and admission to the museum village “that comprises 25 original Shaker buildings on 694 acres of forests, gardens, nature trails and mill ponds,” explained Chip Mattson.

Tickets must be purchased, however, by Saturday, June 7, and may be obtained by sending your check and reservation to HHS, P.O. Box 456, Hampden 04444-0456.

The bus will stop for coffee in Waterville. You should bring a bag lunch, and HHS will provide iced tea and water. On the return trip, the bus will stop for dinner at Cole Farms in Gray.

Karen Higgins, administrator of Phillips-Strickland House in Bangor, invites you to attend a yard sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, May 30, at 21 Boyd St.

Higgins also cordially requests that the event attract “no early birds.”

The annual fundraiser “helps support the activity program at PSH,” Higgins wrote about the only nonprofit, residential facility for seniors in our area.

Woodlawn Museum is offering two Family Treasures Workshops, the first from 9:30 a.m. to noon Friday, May 30, and the second from 9:30 a.m. to noon Friday, June 13, both at the museum on Route 172, Ellsworth.

Executive director Joshua Torrance reports the workshops will be led by collections manager Rosamond Rea and “will include practical, hands-on activities.”

You will learn about proper storage, handling and display of paper objects at the first workshop and about photographs at the second.

The cost is $15 per session for museum members and $20 for nonmembers. Space is limited.

Geneva Frost reminds readers a yard sale to benefit the construction of the Otis Habitat for Humanity house is 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at Beech Hill Storage on Route 180 in Otis.

The sale includes “many items and great bargains,” Frost wrote.

Proceeds benefit construction of the house for the family of Nicholas Hovey, who has cystic fibrosis.

Planning ahead, members of the Hermon High School Class of 2011 are already raising funds for their chemical-free project graduation trip.

Parent Cheryl Olson-Lorenz wrote the class is hosting a Bountiful Basket Bingo at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 1, in the HHS gymnasium on Route 2.

Advance tickets are $10 for 15 games and are available at Aubuchon Hardware in Penobscot Plaza and at Columbia Psychology Associates, Suite 301, 82 Columbia St., both in Bangor.

Students 14 and older can participate, if an adult accompanies them.

Olson-Lorenz explained the group is “sponsoring one major fundraiser a year, until senior year,” for the HHS Class of 2011 Project Graduation.

Charlene Sirois of Old Town reports the Heart of Maine Chorus is hosting a guest night “for women who would like to try singing four-part harmony a cappella.”

If you are interested, you are invited to join the chorus at 7 p.m. Monday, June 2, at the Church of Latter Day Saints on the corner of Grandview Avenue and Essex Street in Bangor.
