SAD 37 budget wins narrow approval

HARRINGTON – The proposed education budget for the Down East towns of SAD 37 was narrowly approved by voters in a referendum Tuesday.

The $8.56 million budget was approved by a vote of 280-270, with two towns voting in support and four opposing the request, which represents an overall increase of 4.58 percent over last year’s budget.

The towns favoring the 2008-09 budget were Cherryfield, 112-21, and Columbia Falls, 57-15. The two towns’ contribution to the budget will increase by 1.42 percent and 5.48 percent respectively over last year.

Voting against the budget were Addison, 48-47; Columbia, 34-16; Harrington, 64-25; and Milbridge, 88-23.

Addison’s contribution will rise by 4.84 percent over last year; Columbia by 10 percent over last year; Harrington by 4.6 percent over last year; and Milbridge by 5 percent over last year.
