Boys and Girls Club

INDIAN ISLAND – The Good Shepherd Food-Bank has received $4,730 to assist the youth of the Penobscot Nation Boys and Girls Club. The grant will purchase a new gas stove for the club’s kitchen and fund the club’s account at the local food bank in Brewer.

“We are excited to be receiving this assistance from the food bank. They’ve been very supportive of our club’s health and nutrition program,” said Carla Fearon, club director. “Our old stove broke a few months ago and it’s irreparable. We’ve had to serve cold meals this whole time and with summer vacation approaching, we weren’t sure what we would do. This is very timely assistance on the part of the Good Shepherd Food-Bank.”

Earth Festival

HAMPDEN – S’mores cooked in homemade solar cookers, a trash-to-treasure table with items free for the taking, and recycling games are just a few of the activities scheduled for the Celebrate Your Earth Festival 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 31, at the George B. Weatherbee Elementary School in Hampden.

The free event, co-sponsored by the Weatherbee School’s Green Team and the Green Team Maine Initiative, will feature educational displays, face painting, children’s crafts, a plant sale, and organic drinks and snacks. The Green Team is sponsoring a free Carbon Reduction Pledge Raffle, which gives participants an opportunity to make positive changes and win a prize.

The school’s Green Team is a student-led environmental club that encourages those of all ages to learn more about environmental issues and helps young people organize and lead projects that make a difference locally and globally.

The Green Team Maine Initiative is a statewide project set up to help young people start Green Teams in their schools.
