Rhode Island resident Elizabeth Strout, who is a graduate of Johnson & Wales University and a 2004 Bangor High School graduate, has registered to participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day, in August, in Boston.

The event is a meaningful one for the young woman whose father, Bangor Daily News editor and outdoor columnist Jeff Strout, is my colleague, and whose mother, Kathy Strout, is a 12-year breast cancer survivor.

To participate with thousands of others in this 60-mile, three-day walk, Elizabeth Strout needs to raise $2,200, and every penny counts, which is why Jeff and Kathy hope readers will help them help their daughter help others.

Net proceeds from this and other Breast Cancer 3-Day events, throughout the country, support “research, education, screening and treatment through the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund,” Kathy Strout wrote.

Jeff’s BDN family shares the couple’s pride in their daughter for taking on this challenge, and hopes you will help her along the way.

And, speaking of challenges, Jeff and Kathy challenge his faithful readers and fellow kayakers to “reach deep and give” for this most worthy cause that is so close to their hearts.

To make a donation, online, visit www.The3Day.org, click on Donate, then Search for Participant, enter Elizabeth Strout’s name and her home state of Rhode Island.

To donate by phone, call 800-996-3DAY.

Congratulations to Morita Tapley of Hermon on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Morita’s School of Dance.

In recognition of this special celebration, Morita’s School of Dance and River City Dance will hold a 40th anniversary production at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at Peakes Auditorium at Bangor High School on Broadway. This production will showcase Bucksport, Lincoln and Milo studios, Tapley wrote.

A student of the late Polly Thomas since she was just 3 years old, Tapley began teaching in 1968 when she was 14.

Her first classes were in her parent’s garage and later in any available rental space until 1980, when a permanent studio was built in Hermon.

Today, Morita’s School of Dance, and River City Dance, which she purchased in 2006, are located at Morgan Hill Event Center on Route 2 in Hermon.
