FEMA’s at it again, ruling that Aroostook had no problem with snow, so it doesn’t need money to help with snow removal costs, just as New Orleans didn’t need pumps.
Last winter’s snow provided Aroostook inhabitants with 15-foot-high drifts and snowbanks. The 17 inches at Easter time does not sound like much, but gale force winds whipped it into drifts. I went outside with plans to plow my drive. On the way to the barn a huge gust of wind picked me up off my feet, dropped me into a drift.
My friend with a pay loader could not get to me that day as he was busier than a cat scratching on a concrete sidewalk. The same situation with my neighbor with the snowblower attached to his tractor. He was one of the DOT guys trying to keep roads open for 36 hours at a stretch.
Similar stories are told throughout Aroostook County. Just what towns will do next fall and winter for snow removal with little or no money left over from last March is the dilemma facing town administrators.
FEMA says, “Nah! You don’t need help!” Let’s hope that the FEMA people now in The Valley are not the same ones who went to New Orleans.
