BAR HARBOR – The director of the Abbe Museum will step down in August, the museum’s board of trustees announced during its annual meeting Wednesday, according to a news release.
Francine Carraro, who has been the director since September 2006, will return to her home state of Texas to be closer to family, according to a press release issued Thursday.
Carraro is out of town until next week and could not be reached for comment.
In the release, however, she was quoted saying, “I have truly been honored to be part of the life at the Abbe and of Bar Harbor. In the last 22 months, we have built upon strengths of the past and forged a positive direction for the future.”
Since Carraro’s arrival in 2006, the museum has seen a 10 percent increase in attendance. She brought several important exhibitions to the museum, including “Journeys West: The David and Peggy Rockefeller American Indian Art Collection.”
“We thank Francine for the energy and enthusiasm she has brought to her efforts on behalf of the Abbe, and we wish Francine all the best in her next endeavor,” said Donna Gann, president of the Abbe board, in the release.
The board of trustees will begin searching for a new executive director and may appoint an interim director in the meantime.
