BREWER – Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline LLC said Friday it will conduct a controlled release of natural gas Monday and Tuesday.
The release is planned as piping is connected at its compressor station, under construction in Brewer, to its existing pipeline.
The releases will occur at the company’s valve sites on Lambert Road in Brewer and near the Bradley-Milford line near Vicki’s Way on:
. Monday, June 2, beginning between 8 and 10 a.m.
. Tuesday, June 3, between noon and 4 p.m.
If work at the Brewer station is completed ahead of schedule, the gas releases may occur earlier in the day Tuesday.
People and equipment will be working continuously at the valve sites and the new compressor station until the work is completed, Maritimes said. The equipment will include portable air compressors, light stands and monitors that constantly measure the levels of natural gas.
As natural gas is released into the air, there will be a loud, rushing noise that may last approximately three hours, Maritimes said. The noise will be accompanied by an odor resulting from the odorant mercaptan, which is injected into the natural gas to make it recognizable for safety reasons.
Natural gas is naturally odorless and is lighter than air. It will quickly rise and dissipate into the atmosphere. The odorant may linger as minute traces separate from the natural gas that is released.
During the releases, if people in the vicinity hear the noise or smell the odorant in natural gas, there should be no cause for alarm, Maritimes said.
The company said it is coordinating the activities with public safety officials, including fire, police and sheriff’s departments, which have been notified of the procedures.
