P.I. home destroyed in blaze

PRESQUE ISLE – A home on Houlton Road was considered a total loss Thursday after a fire gutted the two-story dwelling.

Chief Darrell White of the Presque Isle Fire Department said Friday that someone passing by the building at 448 Houlton Road called the fire department to report that the house was ablaze at 12:50 p.m.

Kathy Perry, who was not home when the fire broke out, owned and lived in the building.

“When we got there, it was totally involved,” the chief said. “With the high winds that were blowing yesterday, it was a nightmare to fight.”

Firefighters were at the scene for close to four hours and returned to the structure briefly on Thursday evening after the fire rekindled, according to White.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, and White did not expect the State Fire Marshal’s Office to investigate, speculating that a cause could not be found due to the extensive damage.

The Caribou Fire Department aided. No one was injured, and White was not sure if Perry was insured.
