LEBANON – Authorities said Friday there’s no sign that a freight train crash near the New Hampshire line that left two teenage girls with missing limbs was anything but an unfortunate accident.
A detective from the York County Sheriff’s Department met with the girls’ family members Friday at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Neither of the teens was able to speak to him because they were undergoing medical treatment, but follow-up interviews will be done later.
Destiny Phaneuf, 13, who lost one of her legs just below the knee, was in fair condition Friday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Rachel Brown, 14, who had a foot severed, was in satisfactory condition.
Officials say the girls, both from Lebanon, fell asleep while sunbathing Wednesday on a trestle near the Milton Three Ponds Dam, a popular swimming spot.
