Regarding George Will’s column, “Environmentalism a threat to freedom” (BDN, May 22), his statements defy logic, jump to erroneous conclusions based on selective fact and fantasy, are exaggerated, and make a model for extremists around the world. His opinion is so riddled with falsehood, partial and selective “facts,” that it would take an hour to prove all their illegitimacy.

Has he not read the last several reports from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change? This panel, composed of thousands of climate scientists from more than 150 nations (including the U.S.), have concluded beyond any reasonable doubt that climate change is real and causing great harm (now and into the future), and that humans are the major cause of its rapidity. And if we don’t make huge changes soon, environmental catastrophes will worsen beyond that to which we can adapt.

Yes, we have been giving up our freedom to do anything we please, anytime and anywhere. That’s why we have laws, enforcement agencies and courts. Obviously, freedom of speech has its limits as well, or at least it should when such ignorance shrouded with half-truths is being published so broadly.
