AUGUSTA – Richard Randall, former president of the University of Maine at Augusta, died at home Saturday.

Randall, 65, of Winthrop retired as president in March after a career at UMA that spanned 40 years. UMA includes University College of Bangor.

He had waged a nearly two-year battle with esophageal cancer.

At commencement exercises last month, which Randall attended, university officials announced they would name the student technology center after the former president.

Randall began his career at the university as a sociology professor in 1967 and held several other positions. He retired in 2001, but returned in 2005 to work as associate provost. Months later, he became university president.
