Community liaison-outreach coordinator Cheryl Daigle of Penobscot River Restoration Trust e-mailed recently that the organization “has two AmeriCorps volunteers working with us this summer, on community outreach, focused on the effort to restore sea-run fish to the river, while rebalancing energy production.”

The volunteers are Ashley Hoskins of Bucksport, who is enrolled in the parks, recreation and tourism program at the University of Maine, and Jillian Allen of Old Town, who is majoring in environmental studies and economics at Brandeis University.

Daigle invites you to meet the young women and learn about other volunteer opportunities with the organization during a slide presentation about the fish and wildlife benefits of the Penobscot River Restoration Project from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at the Old Town Public Library.

PRRT is working to purchase three dams on the river to open “nearly 1,000 miles of spawning and juvenile rearing habitat for 11 species of sea-run fish,” Daigle explained.

Owners of both the Brewer and Old Town Tim Hortons restaurants are participating in the Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation Camp Day on Wednesday, June 4.

Marc and Andrea Nicknair, store owners in Brewer, and Calvin and Karen Boyle, store owners in Old Town, have announced that anyone purchasing a cup of coffee at these restaurants on June 4 will help send children from those communities to camp.

According to the Tim Hortons release, “on Camp Day, every penny, from coffee sales, as well as money raised through special events and activities, is donated to the Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation.”

The Nicknairs report their restaurant will be “sending two girls from Brewer” to camp this summer.

In Old Town, local town officials, including City Manager Peggy Daigle, Orono Fire Chief Buddy Webb and Orono Parks and Recreation Director Norm Poirier, will be among those serving coffee at various times throughout the day, and at 6:30 that evening, the Beecher Boys ‘N Girls bluegrass-hillbilly band will perform.

Jeri White, president of the Ellsworth Business and Professional Women’s Organization, announced its “end-of-the-year celebration” begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at Jasper’s Restaurant in Ellsworth.

During the event, Ellsworth City Manager Michelle Beal will be honored as the Ellsworth BPW Woman of the Year; White will be honored as Member of the Year; and winners of the organization’s two local scholarships will be announced and recognized.

BPW is a national organization that works “to achieve equity for all women in the workplace, through advocacy, education and information.”

Dedham School Parents Teaches Friends and school board member Kristi Kelshaw invites you to enjoy “some great fun, talent and entertainment” when you attend a concert featuring the steel drum band Flash in the Pans 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, June 6, rain or shine, at the Dedham School athletic fields on Route 1A.

Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for children and $10 for families. The concert includes raffles and concessions, and in the event of rain, will be held inside the school gymnasium.

Nan Cobbey reports that the fourth garden in the Belfast Garden Club’s annual Open Garden Day tour is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, June 6, at the home of Sharron Walsh, 16 Birch Lane in Belfast.

“Walsh’s gardens, right on the bay and always breezy,” the club reports, “are relatively new,” as is the gardener to this hobby.

Her garden includes plantings around a patio, boulders throughout her beds, and Nishiki willows.

Working with landscaper Joseph Holmes, Walsh’s theme is shade plants “because the lot was completely wooded,” she explained, so you will find lots of hostas, lilies and astilbe.

Guests will be offered iced tea or lemonade. The club suggests a $3 donation, with all funds raised benefiting the club’s many Belfast Civic Beautification projects.

A 10-visit ticket for $20 is available from club members and at each tour.

A season pass, good for all gardens, is $35 and can be purchased from club members or by calling project chairwoman Martha Block at 338-0085.
