CRYSTAL – Rep. Henry Joy, R-Crystal, is a candidate for re-election in Maine House District 9.
Joy is a retired educator who served as a teacher, junior high baseball, basketball and softball coach, an assistant superintendent and a superintendent. He also served a term on an area school committee and as administrator of Milliken Memorial Hospital in Island Falls. He served more than four years in the Air Force.
Joy has been on several committees during his seven terms in the Legislature, including aging, retirement and veterans, labor, health and human services, utilities and energy, natural resources, and state and local government. He currently serves as the ranking Republican on the State and Local Government Committee and the House Rules Committee, and is also co-chairman of the Legislative Scholarship Committee, which through its fundraising auction provides a $1,000 scholarship for one student from each Maine county.
Joy is employed part time at Crawford Homes in Houlton. He is a member of the Maine Association of Retirees, the Oakfield American Legion and the Island Falls Fish and Game Club. He also serves as a counselor to help area Boy Scouts earn their merit badges. He and his wife, Mary, have four children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
District 9 encompasses the towns of Bancroft, Crystal, Dyer Brook, Haynesville, Hersey, Island Falls, Linneus, Ludlow, Merrill, New Limerick, Oakfield, Patten, Sherman, Stacyville, Weston, the plantations of Glenwood, Macwahoc and Moro, as well as the Unorganized Territory of northern Penobscot and southern Aroostook counties, including Benedicta, Grindstone, Herseytown, Molunkus, Silver Ridge and Smith Pond.
