High school vandals may avoid prosecution

PORTLAND – The 10 Cape Elizabeth High School seniors who vandalized the school early this spring are being given a chance to avoid criminal prosecution.

Cumberland County District Attorney Stephanie Anderson said the students would not be charged with crimes if they agree to sign and comply with a contract whose terms she did not spell out publicly.

The vandals caused an estimated $10,000 in damage to the school during the March 24 incident and classes had to be canceled for a day.

In addition to paying restitution, the students were suspended for 13 days and were barred from participating in spring sports, the prom and other extracurricular activities. School officials say the 10 are being allowed to graduate Sunday with the rest of the senior class.
