Hampden Democrat seeks District 39 seat

HAMPDEN – Dave Higgins is a Democratic candidate for the District 39 seat in the state House of Representatives. The district comprises Dixmont, Hampden and Newburgh.

Higgins grew up in the area, graduated from John Bapst High School and attended the University of Maine, where he received an associate degree in liberal arts.

He worked as a conductor for the Maine Central Railroad for 26 years, retiring in 2002. He is a longtime member of the United Transportation Union, serving as the local chairman. He and his wife, Joann, have a small property management business in Hampden.

In a news release, Higgins promised to reach across the aisle, if elected, to bring good jobs to the area, to fully fund education for Maine’s children, to enact effective tax reform, and to reduce the cost of health care and health insurance.

“One of the biggest hurdles to business in this state,” Higgins said, “is the sad state of our transportation infrastructure. Without needed improvements to our roads, bridges and rail system, it will be difficult to attract new business and sustain economic growth.

“Small businesses, especially, are hard hit with the exorbitant costs of fuel and high tax rates,” Higgins added. “If elected, I will work to bring down our state’s income tax brackets, which may be discouraging businesses and retirees from locating and remaining here.”

He promised to work hard for his constituents if he is elected, studying all sides of the issues before making a decision and respecting the diverse opinions of all who live in the district.

“Being a semi-retired businessman,” Higgins said, “gives me the time to put into serving in the Legislature. I consider it an honor and a privilege to serve you if given the opportunity.”

Higgins and his wife are longtime residents of Hampden, having lived on the Old County Road for 25 years. They have two children, Elizabeth and John.
