Baldacci to visit Canada on trade mission

Gov. John Baldacci will travel to Canada this fall on the 2008 Gubernatorial Trade Mission.

The mission to Vancouver and Toronto, the sixth such business development trip for Baldacci, will be organized by the Maine International Trade Center.

Canada, the top international destination for Maine goods and services, has consistently been Maine’s largest export market, purchasing nearly a third of all Maine exports in 2007 with $890 million of Maine products sold.

The trip will take place Nov. 16-21.

The trade mission will begin in Vancouver, the largest city in British Columbia, where sales of Maine products were up 18 percent from 2006 to 2007, more than in any other province.

The mission will wrap up in Toronto, Canada’s largest city and economic hub. The U.S. trades more with Ontario than with any other country in the world. Ontario was second only to British Columbia in the increase of Maine exports there from 2006 to 2007.
