Flag Day events planned in Bangor, Brewer

The public has two opportunities to celebrate Flag Day, thanks to the hard work of The Flag Day Lady, Judy Butler of Eddington.

Butler invites you to enjoy the Brewer Flag Day Celebration at 6 p.m. Friday, June 13, at Brewer City Hall.

The celebration, which is free, is for those wishing to enjoy patriotic music, poems, speeches and readings on what Butler reminds you is a day to “consider our flag,” and all it means.

Next, you are cordially invited to attend the 20th annual Flag Day Celebration at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 14, rain or shine, at the Bangor Waterfront stage.

“We will have a canopy over the bleachers,” Butler said, and people can also bring chairs, if they wish.

You also are encouraged to come in historical or patriotic costumes to liven up the event, which will feature a variety of entertainment suitable for the occasion.

By the way, when you greet Judy Butler, at either event, please be sure to thank her for all her efforts to make this day so special.

After this year, she told me, “it will be up to someone else” to carry on this tradition.

The Flag Day Lady is retiring, and what a great “retirement gift” it would make if someone would agree to take on this responsibility that The Flag Day Lady has faithfully fulfilled for so many years.

People interested in learning how to grow vegetables in raised beds are invited to attend a Brown Bag Lunch and Lecture from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at Page Farm and Home Museum on the University of Maine campus in Orono.

The free public talk will be led by Donna Coffin, who is the extension educator for the UM Cooperative Extension office in Piscataquis County.

Coffin’s discussion will cover construction, soil mixtures, the best vegetables for this type of growing condition and raised-bed maintenance.

You are invited to bring your own lunch. If you have questions, or wish more information, call museum director Patricia Henner at 581-4100.

The Franklin Historical Society meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at the museum on Route 200.

“Bob Fernald and Emery DeBeck will be presenting one of their routines,” reports Bill Robertson.

“This is our first meeting of the season, and I think it will be a very interesting one,” he said with a chuckle. “The program will be a surprise.”

Everybody is welcome, and refreshments will be served. For more information, call Robertson at 565-2901.

Lucille Gosselin reports the Christian Women’s Club will feature “wedding gowns, pictures and paraphernalia from as early as the 1900s” at its meeting from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at Spectacular Event Center on Griffin Road in Bangor.

Open to everyone, the luncheon is $10, and complimentary child care, for any age, is available when you make your reservation by calling 989-5796.

Singer Lanette Blackwell will be featured, along with guest speaker Glorious Ford, who will discuss To Plan or Not To Plan.

Capital Ambulance co-workers of Lance Sanborn, who is also a Bucksport firefighter-paramedic, are hosting a Benefit Bean Suppa for the Sanborn Family with seating beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 13, at Northeast EMS, Rangeley Hall, on the campus of Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor.

Admission is $7 for adults, $4 for children under 8 or $25 for families.

Pam Day of Capital Ambulance reports that to reserve seating for this event, you should call Northeast EMS at 974-4880.

If you cannot attend, but would like to help this young family as Sanborn recovers from injuries he suffered in a head-on collision earlier this year on the Bucksport-Verona Island Bridge, you can call Day at 973-4700.

Day reports that while Sanborn “is doing much better,” he “expects a long recovery.”

Jim Bird, director of Orono Bog Boardwalk e-mailed that its volunteers, will hold their fifth annual Yard Sale at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at 139 Main St. in Orono. The rain date is Sunday, June 15.

And while Bird reports that organizers have “many items for sale this year,” offering “something for everyone,” donations are being accepted; so if you wish to contribute to this fundraiser, you may do so by calling him at 866-2578.

Proceeds help support operations and maintenance of the Orono Bog Boardwalk.
