Bangor

Cool Sounds concerts

Bangor Center Corp. will present the Cool Sounds concert series at 7 p.m. Thursdays, June 12-July 31, in Pickering Square.

The schedule is: Flash in the Pans, June 12; Ragged Moon, June 19; Montville Project, June 26; Spontaneous Jazz Ensemble, July 3; RetroRockerz, July 10; Wicked Blue with Maximum Blue, July 17; Jambuie, July 24; and Queen City Big Band, July 31.

Also taking place during the same eight-week period in Gomez Park will be the Outdoor Market, now in its third year. The market features Maine-made products, including art, crafts and food.

Summer fun for Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts of Maine will offer Summer Fun 2008, now in its fourth season.

The Arts in Focus sessions for girls age 5 to 17 take place 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. six consecutive Thursdays from July 10 to Aug. 14. Participants will explore the arts through visual and fabric art, photography, theater and dance and choreography.

The last session includes the popular scavenger hunt through downtown Bangor where participants follow clues to visit businesses and museums. They will cap the session with a final creative project.

Girls may register for the full program or sign up for one or more individual sessions. Snacks will be provided each week. Girls should bring their own lunch and a beverage. Registration is encouraged for the first session by June 28. Early registration is recommended.

Botanical gardens trip

The Bangor Garden Club will be host for a bus trip July 15 to the 248-acre Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay Harbor.

The cost is $40, including bus fare, gratuity for the driver and admission to the gardens. Dinner is at participant expense at the Lobster Pound Restaurant in Lincolnville Beach. Reservation deadline is June 30. Proceeds will benefit the program for civic plantings at the University of Maine and a scholarship fund.

Earthquake relief

The Bangor Chinese School is continuing to work on a fund for earthquake relief in China, which suffered a severe earthquake May 12.

Maine Support China will assist the affected area in rebuilding schools, said Jing Zhang of Bangor.

Donations may be made payable to Maine Support China and sent to Maine Support China, 53 Cumberland St., Bangor 04401.

Great Moms Walk

The Mothers of Preschoolers International group of Bangor Baptist Church will sponsor the Great Moms Walk 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, June 21. Meet at Broadway Park, where the walk will begin. The walk will be around the park and is appropriate for all ages.

Participants are encouraged to collect pledges. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Shepherd’s Godparent Home. For more information, call the church at 947-6576, or to register, call Erin Giles at 945-9379.

Rotary Club donations

The Rotary Club of Bangor presented some $18,000 in grants to four local nonprofits at its weekly luncheon on May 27. The proceeds represent money raised from the third annual Music Off Broadway show held in March.

The recipients are the Spruce Run Association, Bangor; Maine Robotics, Orono; 4-H Youth, Orono; and the Pine Tree Chapter of the American Red Cross, Bangor. Representatives from each nonprofit spoke to members about how these grants will assist the organization’s mission.

As part of its Charitable Giving Program, Bangor Rotary awarded a total of $3,000 in smaller grants to the Bangor Land Trust, Bangor Public Library and Bangor High School.

Rotary International is the world’s first service club organization. Its more than 1.2 million members volunteer their time and talent to further the Rotary motto, Service above Self. The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise. Flag Day celebration

Bangor’s 20th annual Flag Day celebration will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 14, on the Bangor waterfront stage. Patriotic music, poems, speeches and readings will highlight the event. The event is free.

Seeking Serenity

The Addictions Ministry at Hammond Street Congregational Church will conduct the final session in its Seeking Serenity series 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, in the church parlor. The session is for those who are affected by addictions in their family and friends. There is no cost to attend. Pancake breakfast

The Hose Five Fire Museum, 247 State St., will hold a pancake breakfast 6-10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at the museum. The cost is $6 and proceeds benefit the museum.

The museum is open 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays during the summer months.

Brewer

Mallett and Morrissey

BREWER – Singer-songwriters David Mallett and Bill Morrissey will perform at the eighth annual Solidarity Celebration, 5:30-9 p.m. Friday, July 4, at 20 Ivers St.

The event will feature guest speakers, including U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, labor movement leaders and the Bush Legacy Bus.

Food will be served, including local organic lamb, homemade vegetarian dishes and a union chili cook-off.

Brewer Hometown Band

The Brewer Hometown Band, under the direction of Beth Zdrojowy and Jan Cox, will perform its first concert of the summer at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 19, on the grounds of the Brewer Auditorium.

The concert will consist of favorite patriotic numbers. All performances for the season begin at 6:30 p.m. and are held on the Brewer Auditorium grounds. In case of bad weather, the concert will be held in the auditorium.

Additional concert dates are Thursdays, July 17, July 31 and Aug. 14.

Commedia dell’arte

I Sebastiani, popular commedia dell’arte troupe in Boston, is coming to Maine at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at the Next Generation Theatre in Bangor. Tickets are $5, $3 children. Reserve seats by calling Tracey at 989-7100.

Members of the troupe will offer a youth workshop in commedia-style theatrics noon-1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 22, at the theater. The cost is $5, $3 children. Those who attend the Saturday night performance receive a $1 discount on the workshop. The workshop is best suited to children age 9 to 16, but all ages are welcome.

Giacomo’s Groceria of Bangor will have available at the Saturday performance Italian sandwiches on rosemary foccacia bread, panzanella salad and mini cannoli.

Next Generation Theatre is located within the Between Friends Art Center and Gift Shop at 39 Center St.

Flag Day celebration

A Flag Day-related celebration will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, June 13, at Brewer City Hall. The event will feature patriotic music, poems, speeches and readings. The event is free.

Bucksport

Over the Bridge Concert

Enjoy great music and art and support Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust at the Over the Bridge Concert for the Wildlands on June 26 at The Alamo Theatre in downtown Bucksport.

The sidewalk art show, cash bar, lounge music, raffle and more will begin at 5 p.m.

Gilpin Railroad Incident, The Toughcats and Sean Mercer will perform live at 7:30 p.m. Call 469-8992 for advance tickets, or purchase tickets at the Orland Market or BookStacks in Bucksport.

Corinth

Quilt show and raffle

The quilt “Star of Corinth,” created during the winter of 2007-08 by Corinth Historical Society member Carol Walker, will be raffled as part of the historical society’s second annual quilt show on Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Corinth Historical Society Museum.

Raffle tickets for the quilt are available. The cost is $1 each or seven for $5. Tickets also will be available at the museum on Old Home Day, Saturday, June 21, and 2-7 p.m. Wednesdays through Aug. 6, or from any historical society member.

Dixmont

Spring fair

The Dixmont Gold Crest Riders Snowmobile Club will sponsor a spring fair 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at the clubhouse on Cates Road. Activities include a yard sale, craft sale, food sale and children’s games.

A horseshoe tournament begins at 11 a.m. Registration, for a fee of $10 for the tournament, begins at 9 a.m. Trophies will be awarded.

A chicken barbecue will be served noon-3 p.m. The cost is $8. The club kitchen also will be open and serving hot dogs, hamburgers, sodas and snacks.

Hampden

Pattern drafting class

The Bangor Area Sewing Guild will offer a class on drafting pants patterns for women at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at the Hampden Municipal Building.

Participants will draft a pattern using their own measurements. The cost is $10 for guild members, $15 others. An additional cost of $5 for supplies will be charged. Bring stretchy pants or pantyhose, over which measurements will be taken. To register or to obtain information, call Kathy at 941-8815.

Orono

Free concert in park

The Orono Public Library will present its annual concert at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, in Webster Park. The concert is free to the public and sponsored by Friends of the Orono Public Library and the Orono-Old Town Kiwanis.

Julie and the Bug Boys will play. Band members are Julie Monroe, a music teacher for 18 child care programs, and entomologists Don Berry on drums and Clay Kirby on bass guitar. They are backed up by professors Jim Artesani, Laura Artesani and Ellie Shufro.

The Friends organization will sell hot dogs, baked goods and balloons. Proceeds from the sale will benefit library programs.

In case of rain, the concert will be held at the Keith Anderson Community House. Donations of baked goods will be accepted the day of the concert. For additional information, call the library at 866-5060.
